Conifer Infested with Marine Mollusks
Jurassic
Miles River, NSW, Australia

Australians have nicknamed this wood peanut wood because of its appearance. The round and oval shapes in the lower half of the picture are borings of marine mollusks and the granular material within the borings are excreta and sand fill. The presence of marine mollusks indicates that the sea encroached upon the relatively dry land on which the trees once grew.
