Bogwood
Jurassic
McDermitt, Oregon

This wood has been petrified in a swamp-like environment. The blue color is most probably due to relatively high concentrations of one or more heavy metals such as titanium, cobalt or copper, the presence of which, suggests volcanic activity. Ions of these heavy metals are both bactericidal and fungicidal and would have played a role in preventing the wood from totally decomposing.
